CBD Hemp Flower vs. Traditional Cannabis: What’s the Difference?

Differences Between CBD and Cannabis

CBD hemp flower and traditional cannabis, also known as marijuana, come from the same plant species, Cannabis sativa. They’re related, but not the same.

CBD hemp flower and traditional cannabis have distinct differences that set them apart in terms of their legal status, chemical makeup, and effects on the body.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a non-psychoactive compound found in cannabis plants. It is known for its potential therapeutic benefits, such as general relief, pain, and improving sleep. On the other hand, traditional cannabis contains higher levels of THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, the psychoactive compound responsible for the “high” associated with marijuana use.

The purpose of this article is to explore the differences between CBD hemp flower and traditional cannabis, and to provide readers with a better understanding of the legal status, chemical makeup, and effects of each. We will also discuss the smokable hemp products such as CBD joints, CBD pre roll, hemp rolls, and pre rolls, as they offer a convenient and discreet way to consume CBD.

Cannabis Sativa: Indica vs. Sativa

Before we get started, we want to explain “Cannabis sativa” because the terms “sativa” and “indica” are so common in the cannabis world. We don’t want to bore you all with taxanomical plant physiology so we’ll keep it simple:

Cannabis sativa is the genus and species of the plant. And two of the plant’s three subspecies are sativa and indica. So, both indica and sativa come from Cannabis sativa.

The third subspecies is ruderalis (though that’s less relevant for our world.)

These subspecies are differentiated based on differences in their morphology, chemical composition, and geographical origin. Cannabis sativa is a tall and thin plant with narrow leaves, and is typically grown in warm and tropical regions. Cannabis indica is a short and stout plant with wide leaves, and is typically grown in cooler and temperate regions. Cannabis ruderalis is a small plant with a low THC content and is typically found in central and eastern Europe. These subspecies have been hybridized to create numerous cultivars that have specific characteristics, such as high THC content, high CBD content, or specific terpene profiles.

Cannabis is a general term that refers to a family of plants that includes both marijuana and hemp.

Legal Status: CBD Hemp Flower vs. Traditional Cannabis

The legal status of CBD hemp flower and traditional cannabis is one of the most significant differences between the two. This is covered in our recent blog: What Is The Farm Bill And Why Is It So Important?

The 2018 Farm Bill removed hemp as a federally controlled substance and made way for the legal cannabis industry that we have today with CBD, Delta-8 THC, and more. It legalized all cannabis and cannabis products as long as they were hemp derived and contained no more than 0.3% Delta-9 THC by dry weight. Prior to the Farm Bill all cannabis and cannabis products were deemed Schedule I drugs under the federal Controlled Substances Act of 1970.

Cannabis products that meet this standard can be sold, possessed, and transported across state lines without fear of legal repercussions from the federal government

This legislation gave birth to our industry. However, it is important to note that some states have additional restrictions on CBD and other hemp products that the Farm Bill has allowed at the national level (such as Delta-8, which you can read all about here.) For example, some states may only allow the use of CBD for specific medical conditions, or may require that CBD products be sold through licensed dispensaries. It is important to be aware of the laws in your state and to only purchase and use CBD products that are in compliance with those laws.

Then there’s traditional cannabis, which is marijuana that has a Delta-9 THC level above 0.3% by dry weight. That traditional cannabis is still illegal at the federal level and its legality varies from state to state. As of now, 36 states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for medicinal or recreational use. Presently, the federal government has adopted a policy of non-interference with states that have legalized marijuana.

Chemical Makeup: CBD Hemp Flower vs. Traditional Cannabis

The chemical makeup of CBD hemp flower and traditional cannabis is also vastly different.

The primary difference is  cannabinoid content.

Cannabinoids are chemical compounds that are found in the Cannabis plant. They are responsible for the majority of the effects that Cannabis has on the body. There are over 100 different cannabinoids found in cannabis, but the two most well-known and well-studied are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol).

THC (or, Delta-9 THC) is the psychoactive cannabinoid that is responsible for the feeling of being “high” when marijuana is consumed. It is found in higher concentrations in marijuana plants than in hemp plants. CBD is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid that does not produce the feeling of being “high”. It is found in both marijuana and hemp plants, but it is much more abundant in hemp.

CBD hemp flower also contains other beneficial compounds such as terpenes and flavonoids. Terpenes are responsible for the unique aroma and flavor of the plant, while flavonoids are known for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Cannabinoids interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in a variety of physiological processes, including appetite, pain sensation, mood, and memory. The effects of cannabinoids can vary depending on the type of cannabinoid and the individual person.

Other common cannabinoids include: CBD, CBN, THCV, and THCA.

Smokable CBD Hemp Flower

Smokable hemp products, such as CBD joints, CBD pre roll, hemp rolls, and pre rolls, offer a convenient and discreet way to consume CBD. These products are made from CBD hemp flower, which as discussed earlier, contains less than 0.3% THC. This means that they will not produce the psychoactive effects associated with traditional cannabis. They provide an alternative for people who want the benefits of CBD without the high.

Smokable hemp products also offer a convenient and discreet way to consume CBD. They are also a convenient and discreet option, as they can be easily transported and used on the go. CBD joints and hemp rolls can be enjoyed just like traditional cannabis products, making them a versatile and accessible option for those looking to incorporate CBD into their daily routine.

Smokable hemp products are available in a variety of strains and blends, allowing consumers to choose the product that best suits their needs and preferences. They are also available in different strengths, making them a versatile option for those with varying levels of tolerance and desired effects. Whether you are looking for a relaxing and calming experience or seeking relief, smokable hemp products offer a range of options to suit your needs.

Additionally, smokable hemp products are generally more accessible to consumers as they are legal in most states and can be purchased without a medical prescription.

Side Effects and Interactions

CBD hemp flower, like all forms of cannabis, can have potential side effects and interactions with medications. However, because CBD hemp flower contains extremely low levels of THC, the side effects are generally milder than those associated with traditional cannabis.

Some of the most commonly reported side effects of CBD hemp flower include dry mouth, drowsiness, and changes in appetite. These side effects are usually temporary and can be alleviated by adjusting the dosage or timing of use.

However, it’s important to note that CBD can interact with certain medications, particularly those that are metabolized by the liver. If you are currently taking any medications, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before using CBD hemp flower. They can advise you on any potential interactions and help you adjust your dosage as needed.

Side effects of traditional cannabis vary by method of use, the potency of the product, and the individual’s own biology and tolerance. Some common side effects of marijuana use include: dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, red eyes, short-term memory impairment, paranoia, motor skill impairment, increased appetite, and more.

Product Safety and Quality of CBD Hemp Flower Products

Unfortunately the growing popularity of CBD hemp flower has attracted some unscrupulous players to the market, making it challenging to identify high-quality products. To ensure the safety and quality of the CBD hemp flower products you purchase, it is important to understand the standards and regulations that govern their production and to purchase from reputable sources.

Purchasing CBD hemp flower products from reputable sources is crucial to ensure their safety and quality. Reputable sources use high-quality ingredients, employ strict quality control measures, and comply with all relevant regulations. This helps to ensure that the products you receive are pure, free of contaminants, and accurately labeled. Additionally, purchasing from reputable sources protects you from being exposed to low-quality products that can be harmful to your health.

To ensure that you are purchasing high-quality CBD hemp flower products, consider the following tips:

  • Look for third-party lab results: Reputable companies will have their products tested by independent third-party labs to ensure their quality and purity. Look for companies that make their lab results readily available to consumers.
  • Look for products with clear and accurate labeling: Make sure that the product you purchase is clearly labeled, indicating the CBD content, any other ingredients, and any potential allergens.
  • Consider the extraction method: Look for products made with CO2 extraction, as this is the most efficient and safe method of extracting CBD from hemp.  Read online reviews: Look for online reviews from other customers to gauge their experience with the product and the company.

By following these tips, you can increase your chances of purchasing high-quality CBD hemp flower products that are safe and effective. Remember to always consult with a healthcare professional before using any new CBD hemp flower product, especially if you have any pre-existing medical conditions.

Purchasing high-quality CBD hemp flower products is essential to ensure your safety and the effectiveness of the product. Look for reputable sources, consider third-party lab results, and be mindful of the production processes and ingredients when making your purchase. By taking these steps, you can ensure that you receive the best possible product and enjoy the benefits of CBD hemp flower to the fullest.
